Boyda Sticks Finger in Wind?

A majority of Americans believe we can win in Iraq. 53% now support winning, up from 42% in September. Is it any wonder that Nancy Boyda has softened her anti-winning rhetoric? Remember last August when she basically called a highly respected former general a liar and stormed out of the hearing where he said the surge was working.

Then starting in December, Boyda, along with many other Democrats started to admit the surge was working.

Boyda has been all over the place since this war began. She started out protesting it and leading a group of protestors to come to Washington, DC with the radical group ANSWER. Then, in 2004 while running for Congress, she backed away from the radical line and started saying we should support our troops so they could win. Then, in 2006, she changed again, riding the Democrat wave of defeatism and retreat into office.

After a brief episode on national television where she said she would support the surge, she then voted against it. She voted to withdraw our troops within a few months. She spoke out against the surge, saying it would not work.

Then there was the general incident. How sad.

Despite sheepishly admitting the surge was in fact working, she has since voted to deny the ability of our intelligence community to provide timely information to our troops in Iraq about potential terrorist activities, and to divert some of the CIA's precious time and resources to monitor global warming.

Had enough of this unprincipled and inconsistent voting pattern that will leave us less safe?

SHOCKER! Boyda Liberal on Intelligence

Rep. Nancy Boyda (KS-02) cast yet another vote that compromises America's
national security and adds to her increasingly liberal voting record. In a
weak attempt to distract voters from their negligence to renew the Protect
America Act, Boyda voted in lock-step with the liberal Democrat leadership to
fund duplicitous pet projects over critical human intelligence programs.

Boyda chose for the second time to gut human intelligence funding and
instead stuff the Intelligence Authorization bill chock full of pet
projects, including Jack Murtha’s “boondoggle” earmark, and a funding mandate to monitor climate change as potential “security threat” (House Roll Call 117).

Ignoring a recent Gallup Poll, which ranks Iraq and terrorism
and national security as the top two issues on the minds of Americans, Nancy
Boyda continues to abdicate her duty to protect the American people and instead
supported yet another attempt by the Democrats to block the bipartisan Senate
bill to renew the Protect America Act (House Roll Call 116).

“The longer Nancy Boyda is in Washington , DC , the more liberal her
voting record becomes. Boyda made a joke of national security by voting to
divert taxpayer money away from critical legislation that would fund America ’s
human intelligence programs, instead using it to fund boondoggle pet projects,”
said NRCC spokesman Ken Spain . “Twenty-four days and counting, Boyda is
still putting the security of her constituents at grave risk as she continues to
do the bidding of the Democrat majority and their dangerous national security
agenda.”

When will Nancy Boyda fulfill her duty to protect Americans from real
threats and quit playing games with our national security?

Are you kidding me, the CIA is going to have to monitor climate change? What are they thinking?

I Don't Usually Do This

I tend to confine my remarks to the Second District race, and I know that there are Republicans who have sex charges issues (see Sens. Craig and Vitter), but I agree with Roger Simon from the Politico in DC who said, "if stupidity ever gets to $200 a barrel, I want drilling rights to Eliot Spitzer’s head."

This guy made a living and a political name for himself using electronic surveillance and strong arm tactics to prosecute white collar crime. Then he sends e-mails to arrange for a prostitute.

What is it with Democrat Attorney Generals and stupidity recently?

It just proves that it has nothing to do with one political party or another, it's that "I'm better than you" attitude too many politicians have. Power and arrogance, a bad combination.

Nancy Violates House Ethics Rules

Late last night, Nancy Pelosi instructed that the House floor vote be left open well over the allotted 15 minutes to allow her lieutenants to twist arms and get Democrats to change their votes - a clear violation of House rules.

Wait a minute. After Democrats took over last year, they pledged, and even wrote into the House rules that this arm twisting by the majority would never again happen. Sure, the awful Republicans did it on prescription drugs (a bill Jim Ryun voted against despite arm twisting from Republican leadership and President Bush). But not us. We Democrats are for fairness *cough* *cough* *cough* in elections. We're for counting every vote, as many times as necessary, until we win. I mean, we want Members of Congress to be able to vote their conscience.

Nancy Boyda decried the tactics of the Republican majority when she was running for Congress, but last night she fell right in line (as usual) with Speaker San Fran Nan Pelosi. No outrage. No press release decrying these undemocratic tactics, these unethical violation of House rules.

No, Nancy Boyda is loyal to Nancy Pelosi and will stay in quiet assent to the House rules violation.

And the irony of it all, this ethical violation took place on a vote to . . . drumroll please . . . . . . create a new outside ethics panel.

On the Lighter Side

Missouri reps don't like Boyda's KU commendation.

“I commend KU on their season,” said Rep. Kenny Hulshof, R-Columbia. “It
was almost as good as the Missouri Tigers’ spectacular season.”

He said that “in the spirit of compromise,” he had intended to cast a ‘yes’
vote but “found myself physically unable to do it as I reached for the lever.
Besides, all the votes in the world won’t make the #7 higher than the #4.”

He voted “present,” as did the state’s other lawmakers. Despite the
protest, the measure passed, 396 to 21.

Oh well. But, the bigger question is, does K-State appreciate Boyda stepping out for KU since the Wildcats are in the Second District, not the Jayhawks?

Bloc and Nancy - Two Hypocrites in a Pod

I do not like Nancy Boyda. There's no secret about that. I've pointed out that Boyda is more like Nancy Pelosi than the average person in Kansas. I've said she's a hypocrite. I've said she has told lies (spin, shading the truth, etc, whatever you want to call it she does it to intentionally mislead). I've made no bones about it.

BoydaBloc, who gets upset when I call him BlocBoyda, has whined and moaned about my posts. Calling me "junior high," among other things to suggest I am unfairly characterizing him and his dear beloved Nancy. So, since he continues to pound away with his righteous indignation, I want to take just a couple minutes to recap some of the hypocrisy of my friend at the Bloc:

He's called Jim Ryun and Lynn Jenkins "unethical" and unfit to serve in office. He accused Jim of disenfranchising voters. He called Lynn "paranoid" and "lazy." He put Lynn's head on a cartoon cat body and stretched her face to look like a clown. That's not juvenile, at all . . . He called me, and all Republicans "nutjobs." I could go on and on, but you get the point. It's hypocritical (oops, there I go, calling people names again) for the Bloc to complain about the terminology I use in my posts. You've heard the one about the pot and the kettle.

He thinks it's ok to use hyperbole on others, but not when it's directed at him or the queen bee of thin skin, Boyda-Pelosi. This gets to the very pysche of who he is.

It's no secret that Democrats, particularly liberal Democrats, have a double standard. I cannot tell you how many debates I have watched when the liberal comes unglued when challenged on their talking points. It's who they are. Talk to a reporter or editor in the Second District, and they will tell you, off the record of course, that they have more than once encountered an indignant Nancy or Steve Boyda over the direction of a news story. Heaven forbid we challenge their version of the story. It always ends in something along the lines of, "this is another politically motivated attack by an unfair partisan hack." Oh, poor, poor me. Those right wing extremists are picking on me again.

Bottom line, it's a complete lack of personal responsibility for their actions. It's how Nancy Boyda can simply change her positions on the issues without any regard for principle. It's how BoydaBloc can ridicule others with impunity while crying about what other say about him, or his hero Nancy.

I have never once complained, whined or cried about the Bloc's name calling, nor will I here. In fact, I welcome it. It's called free speech. It's a cornerstone of the freedoms our founding fathers stood for. So, Bloc is free to engage in whatever speech he chooses, even if it's hypocritical. I'm ok with it. But please, don't try to claim some "moral high ground" in this war of words. You haven't earned it.

Nancy Boyda is indeed Nancy Boyda-Pelosi . . .

When you pull up the "progressive" scorecard (progressive means liberal, really liberal) it says, Nancy Boyda scored only a 40%, sounds like she's in the center, right? Wrong. She scores 0% on the "conservative" side of the ledger.

In fact, on every vote that's taken place on the progressive/liberal agenda, Boyda-Pelosi voted with the liberals. Her score has only gone down because she hasn't co-sponsored (lent her name to) pieces of legislation that they want to push forward. But, when the rubber meets the road and Boyda has to vote, it's liberals 100% to conservatives 0%.

In fact, there are more Boyda scores (based on actual votes):

Service Employees International Union - 89%
The uber-liberal Americans for Democratic Action - 80%

League of Conservation Voters 70%

ACLU - 67%

If you combine these 5 with the Progressive scorecard above, based on actual votes taken, Boyda scores 84.3% liberal.

What about conservative group ratings:

Americans for Prosperity - 0 %
Club for Growth - 0%
Family Research Council - 6%

If you combine these 3 with the Progessive scorecard above, based on actual votes taken, Boyda scores a 1.5% conservative.

The verdict is in, Boyda has an 84.3% average liberal score versus 1.5% average conservative score. When it counts, Nancy votes liberal.

I Have Touched a Nerve

There are now two Boyda apologists attacking me out there in cyberspace. Apparently, I'm hitting a little too close to home when it comes to Rep. Boyda. You see liberals believe in freedom of speech until they don't like the speech you're giving. At which point, they attack you. They know Nancy is hard to defend, so they attack.

Here are five things to consider in this ongoing debate:

1. Nancy Boyda changes positions on issues whenever it suits her needs. This is well-documented. At some point, you have to say, when is she telling me the truth, OR what kind of character does she have, OR does she ever take a principled position?

2. Nancy Boyda was rejected from the Blue Dogs because she was LIBERAL, it had nothing to do with some membership limit (that defies common sense).

3. Somehow she gave the National Journal the impression that she didn't apply, nor did she want to be a part of the Blue Dogs. The way the quote was worded, it seems to go beyond a simple reporting mistake to suggest Boyda left them with that impression. Moreover, I think it's ridiculous to suggest that if the Blue Dogs had come to Nancy in January and offered her a slot for this year that she wouldn't have taken it and sent out multiple press releases. That leads to the main point of the post that started all this, Nancy spins everything. When all you ever do is spin, you are no longer telling the truth.

4. I don't care what the screwy National Journal rankings say (and the rankings have nothing to do with the quality of the reporters, the rankings are established by the editors, I said they were reputable, I didn't say the rankings were right), when you vote with San Fran Nan Pelosi 93% of the time, you are not in the middle, you are on the left. When you have a 100% NARAL rating, you are not in the center. When you vote with trial lawyers and unions over small business owners and national security, you are not in the center you are on the left.

5. Let's not forget other mention in the article about Boyda turning down fundraising help from Democrat leadership. Boyda is at best shading the truth about this. She didn't technically become a part of the program, but she shared the same donors, at the same times as those in the program, and she used Speaker Pelosi's name to raise money. If you get the money, you are part of the program.

My two detractors cannot argue with me on substance, so the attacks will continue. That's fine. I welcome the debate.

Retraction . . . Why?

Some have called on me to issue a retraction for my latest post. Let's be clear, I was quoting the National Journal, not some unnamed source. Since Rep. Boyda's office didn't send me the press release she supposedly sent out clarifying the information she gave the National Journal that she did not apply to the Blue Dog Coalition, I'm under no obligation to do anything. In fact, if the National Journal was in error in reporting, then they should be the ones to issue a correction, not a retraction. Please, BlocBoyda, if you are going to pretend to be a journalist, at least know what you're saying.

Moreover, I tend to believe that the National Journal had the impression Boyda was trying to say she didn't apply to the Blue Dogs. It is a reputable publication with good reporters. What would they have to gain by making it up?

This is Boyda's M.O., get whacked down for a position or a statement (or in this case being too liberal for the Blue Dogs), then try to pretend it didn't exist or try to change it, then get called on the carpet for changing your position, then blame everything on partisan politics. Dizzying, isn't it?

The only retraction I want to make is to pull Nancy Boyda out of office because I've had enough of the spinning and positioning and generally all the fake sincerity and false outrage that Nancy spits out. Maybe the other blog out there that takes orders from Nancy and Steve Boyda drank the kool-aid and says "how high" when asked to jump, but the truth is the truth. And the truth is, Nancy Boyda is liberal, she will lie in a heartbeat (particularly when she thinks she can get away with it), she embarrasses herself and Kansans regularly, and she has a growing reputation for being pushy and mean when off the record.

Either of our Republican nominees offers a stark contrast to the way in which Nancy Boyda operates, votes and believes. It will be a pleasure to have this blog go dark next November as Nancy is ushered out of office.

Nancy Boyda can change positions faster than you can change your socks, but yesterday she once again insulted our intelligence and thinks we won't notice.

Everyone remembers when Nancy Boyda was rejected for membership in the moderate Blue Dog Coalition.
"The newly exclusive Blue Dog Coalition added five members
Tuesday… While Reps. Nancy Boyda (Kan.), Henry Cuellar (Texas) and Harry
Mitchell (Ariz.) also applied, Blue Dog leaders said those Members were not
selected…” (Roll Call, 06/14/07)

Well, Nancy says, pay no attention to that well-established truth in yesterday's National Journal.
“She is so independent that she has refused to join the House’s moderate
‘Blue Dog’ Democrats and has turned down entreaties to participate in party
programs to promote her re-election.” (National Journal, 03/07/08)

Ah, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha . . . does she really think we're that stupid (KS press corps excluded)?

She got rejected for the Blue Dogs because she votes with San Fran Nan Pelosi 93% of the time. That's not independent, that's LIBERAL!

And, she may have turned down the official participation in the program, but she gave San Fran Nan a wink and a nod and got all the money anyway.

Ryun Makes Earmark Pledge

RYUN PLEDGES NO NEW EARMARKS

TOPEKA, KS – Jim Ryun has pledged to refrain from requesting earmarks if returned to office in an effort to end wasteful government spending in Washington. Ryun cited the broken system and the dissatisfaction of Kansans with Washington as the reasons behind joining several other Republican and Democrat Members of Congress in this pledge.

“The earmark crisis is out of control and I am committed to fighting for the return of fiscal conservatism and integrity to the system,” Ryun said. “People do not trust Washington and it is clear that transparency is not working. I am joining the earmark reform movement in Washington and will work to repair an obviously broken system.”

Current Republican leaders who have already pledged a personal earmark moratorium include House Minority Leader John Boehner as well as the Republican Nominee for President, John McCain.

“There is no greater way to lead than by example and I challenge my primary and general opponents to join this effort for reform,” Ryun said.

Fight Against Wasteful Spending
In Congress I will work to reduce spending and slow the growth of a bloated federal bureaucracy.

I will work to reform a broken earmark system that has allowed frivolous and wasteful projects to receive federal taxpayer dollars in recent years.

In 2006, Nancy Boyda and many other Democrats ran on the promise of reforming the earmark process, but their “reforms” were cosmetic and have done little to reduce wasteful spending.

It’s Time for Real Reform

Real reforms to the earmark system will not harm the progress of legitimate projects, but it will end the use of YOUR MONEY for projects that Congress voted to fund in recent years like a bridge to nowhere, a teapot museum, and a study on the DNA of bears.

I simply refuse to believe that our federal government should have any role in spending YOUR MONEY on projects such as these. Only real reform will limit future wasteful spending. That's why I signed the Citizens Against Government Waste Earmark Reform Pledge, a pledge to reform a broken system.

Jim Ryun has pledged not to seek any earmarks. There is a difference. Whichever position you like is open for debate, I haven't commented on which is better or worse.]

Please Tell the Truth

While Ryun was wrong to go on the attack against Jenkins for her Learning Quest ads, I have to say, this article from the Holton Recorder on Jenkins' website reflects that charges, and in this case an untruthful one, are going both ways.

Jenkins also noted that Ryun, who is "expected" to move back to Kansas and
launch a re-election campaign . . .

"Expected" to move back? Ryun has been spending most of his time living in his home in Lawrence for the past year. This is no secret, Lynn. The Jenkins campaign strategy is to paint Jim Ryun as out of touch with Kansans, I get that. But her statement is simply not true.

Ronald Reagan had an 11th Commandment about not speaking ill of a fellow Republican. While he did campaign hard that Gerald Ford was not the best nominee in 1976, he did so by sticking to the issues and differentiating himself, not by misleading people.

Please Jim and Lynn, make the best case as to why you're better for the people of Kansas than Nancy Boyda. That will be most attractive to primary voters.

More On "Forget Intelligence, Sue Away" Nancy

Fightin' FISA Nancy just can't catch a break.

Now Kansas Attorney General Steve Six has joined in a letter demanding that Congress pass FISA reauthorization immediately.
“As Attorneys General, we are our states' chief law enforcement officials
and therefore responsible for taking whatever action is necessary to keep our
citizens safe. With S. 2248 still pending in the House of Representatives, our
national security is in jeopardy.”

Not the House-passed FISA reauthorization, AG Six supports the Senate compromise bill that got 68 votes - the one trial-lawyer owned Nancy says "shreds the Constitution." So, is Nancy saying that our AG wants to shred the Constitution too? Is she just mad that her hubby Steve didn't get the AG appointment?

If you had any doubts before that the "not in the pocket of the trial lawyer lobby" Democrats supported this legislation, you can remove those doubts now. Boyda-Pelosi is holding our security hostage to the right to sue anyone and everyone with impunity all for her biggest campaign contributors.

Interesting Crew

I had to work out of town for a few days with limited Internet access or time, so sorry for the lack of posts . . . have to keep paying the bills.

Nancy Boyda's name recently popped up with an endorsement of Vic Wulsin for Congress in Ohio. Along with Dennis Moore and Kathy's dad, former Governor Jack Gilligan, she joined ethically-challenged Congressional appropriator Jack Murtha - Nancy Pelosi's choice to be Democrat Majority Leader in the House.

She also joined some, shall we say, traditional leftist and leftist supporting organizations - The Feminist Majority, The National Organization of Women, and of course, the Unions! If you're wondering why the women's groups are so heavily supporting Vic, Vic is short for Victoria.

What does Vic stand for? Not much, at least according to her issues page. She has had to answer questions about her participation in a health study which involved infecting African AIDS patients with malaria as a possible cure for AIDS. You can watch her primary opponent's ad on the subject here. (This sounds like something Steve Boyda and his trial lawyer buddies would sue her for if they had the chance - health fraud.)

With the involvement of the Governor's father in this endorsement, I'd say the apple doesn't fall far from the tree when it comes to recommending Democrats with questionable skeletons in the closet. Kathleen surely didn't do her homework on Paul Morrison either.

Maybe a reporter should ask Nancy Boyda why she'd support a candidate who seemingly supported an effort to use such a questionable treatment on African AIDS patients . . .

Higher Gas Prices for Us? Tax Breaks for Hugo Chavez?

When Bill Clinton ran for office, much was made of the sign hanging in their campaign office which said, "It's the economy stupid." The Democrat Party has decided to not revisit the Clinton years and hand the nomination to one of the most liberal of their own. In keeping with that trend, House Democrats decided it would be a good time to give a good kick in the teeth to American consumers by raising taxes on oil companies. Nancy Boyda-Pelosi must have missed economics classes in college, because these oil companies would certainly pass those increases costs of doing business straight through to their consumers. And who will that hurt the most, the poorest Americans who have the least wiggle room in their budgets.

Ironically, the House energy tax increase left in place the tax incentive for the Hugo Chavez controlled Citgo. The same Hugo Chavez that just recently threatened to quit selling oil to the United States, and those very words drove up the price of oil, and we saw a price spike at the pump. Obviously, the Democrats, with lemming Nancy Boyda-Pelosi on board, bowed to his threats and left his tax break in place.

If this is any evidence of the type of America we would be forced to live in with a President Obama and a Democrat-controlled Congress, we should rethink how we're voting. If our foreign policy is to bow to the threats of dictators, that's a real problem. If our economic policy is to raise the prices of goods and services on consumers by raising the costs of doing business for companies, that's not good news for our future. It'll be like Jimmy Carter and 1977 all over again. Those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

Yet, Nancy proudly proclaimed:

"For years," Boyda said, "nobody in Washington had the guts to stand up to Big
Oil. This bill says, 'Enough is enough.'"

This is America Nancy. Businesses are allowed to make money. It's ok. In fact, like you, many people across this country have their retirement savings in the stock market. We want to invest in stocks that MAKE MONEY. Millions of Americans, or their retirement funds, probably own stock in OIL COMPANIES. So, not only are you hurting our economy in the short run by raising energy prices even further, you would hurt the IRA's and 401(k)'s of people who will need them when Social Security fails to provide what it promised - not that you Democrats admit there will be a problem with Social Security.

I've had enough of you, Nancy. Please, get a clue.

Follow the Bouncing Boyda

After going on national network news last January and saying she would support Bush's decision to order a surge, Nancy Boyda quickly reversed positions and voted against it. In the video below is a reminder that Nancy Boyda then spoke out strongly against the surge last year. She said it would not work.

In July, Boyda walked out of an Armed Services Committee hearing because after hearing the good news about the successes of the surge she said, "There was only so much that you could take until we in fact had to leave the room for a while." She then proceeded to lecture the general on what was really happening in Iraq, despite the fact she hadn't been there in 4 months and he had just returned.

In December, she, as with many Democrats, changed her tune, saying a bad situation was getting better and that Americans should be "rejoicing" that things are getting better in Iraq.

Democrats in Washington are talking about more Iraq withdrawl votes as moveon.org seems to ramping up pressure to do so. So when is a reporter going to ask her if she will vote in the House this year, or for a President Obama or President Clinton's plan next year, to withdraw our troops from Iraq?

There's a good chance Boyda will vote to withdraw, regardless of how she answers the question. And, whatever she does, there's nothing that will prevent her from changing positions again soon.

A Letter You Might Want to Send

Dear Representative Boyda,

I am writing today about the Protect America Act.

After 9/11, Congress and the President gave our intelligence community updated tools to listen in on terrorist "chatter." This was the recommendation of many experts, including the 9/11 Commission. As a result of the FISA changes and many other important tools, at least 19 attacks against the United States have been stopped by the fine men and women of our intelligence community, not to mention critical intelligence gathering for our troops fighting in Iraq to go after terrorist cells there.

So, I have two simple questions for you to answer since you oppose the continuation of these tools. First, what will you tell me at the funeral of my wife, son, daughter, mother, father, sister or brother if they are killed in a terrorist attack that could have been prevented with the intelligence that cannot be gathered at this time? Second, what will you tell the family of one of our soldiers at their funeral from an attack that could have been prevented with the intelligence gathered under FISA?

These are the stakes Nancy Boyda is playing with at the behest of her largest contributors - the trial lawyers.

What's worse, last week, the Democrat leaders of the House Intelligence Committee sent their staff to the CIA to discuss the CIA's efforts on climate change. That's right, they didn't go over to talk about the need to reauthorize FISA. They talked about global warming.

Did Boyda Even Read the FISA Bill?

After reading this article in the Joplin Globe, I've been assured that Nancy Boyda is only against the FISA bill because the trial lawyers (her husband Steve) tell her to be. Here is the relevant quote that proves Boyda-Pelosi (yes, it's appropriate when spouting the party talking points) is either clueless or running cover for the trial lawyers:

She said there is little judicial or congressional oversight in the bill, giving free reign to the executive branch.
“The Protect America Act does away with court oversight and puts everything in the executive branch,” Boyda said. “People should be horrified of that.”

This is simply not true. The legislation requires the administration to report regularly to the Congressional intelligence committees. It even adds a requirement that when a U.S. citizen is the target of an investigation abroad, that the FISA court must review the intelligence community's procedures. Most constitutional scholars will tell you that this would not be required by a Supreme Court review of the law.

It also requires the FISA court be involved in the same ways as contemplated when a Democrat Congress and President passed this legislation in 1978. At that time, the legislation clearly intended that our intelligence community would be able to track terrorists without court orders overseas. The only changes the administration wants are to catch the law up with technology, i.e. if a terrorist call from Canada to another terrorist in Canada bounces off a cell tower in Buffalo, we should be able to trace it without getting a warrant.

Which makes the following quote read hollow if know the truth about the FISA law:

Boyda said the Federal Intelligence Surveillance Act has been amended over the years so that it keeps up with changing technology.

This is simply not true. If Boyda had gone to any of the classified briefings, she would know this.

So, why would Nancy Boyda take such a public position she either knows to be untrue, or show that she was too lazy to read the legislation first? It's simple, because the trial lawyers want to file more frivolous lawsuits.

Boyda also said she doesn’t favor giving immunity to the telephone and communication companies.

“The president will not tell us what he wants immunity from,” Boyda said. “He wants blanket immunity. The American people should be alarmed.”

What's alarming is that you are so in the pocket of your biggest campaign contributors that you will say anything to defend them.

The President and the Administration have been very clear why these companies need immunity. The companies got a legal opinion from the Justice Department that these actions were taken in accordance with the law and to protect us from future terrorist attacks. Why should good actors be punished by allowing unlimited frivolous lawsuits and why should my phone bills go up because of it?

Had enough of Nancy being in the pocket of the trial lawyers?

Boyda and Ryun in SEK

Nancy Boyda visited the Pitt State Tech Center - a Tech Center Jim Ryun helped get off the ground with funding about 10 years ago.

Boyda didn't mention it. Instead, she was using the event as a photo-op to show that not all her pork projects (see the fake prison museum) were bad special favors to lobbyists.

Here at Bounce Boyda, we never claimed all direct federal spending in the district is bad. We do believe that getting thank you campaign events from lobbyists is bad and that funding for fake prison museums leaves a lot to question.

Boyda? or Pelosi? or both? is spurring quite a bit of discussion, on this blog and others.

I've made quite clear my opinions on why the two Nancys are tied at the hip.

But to answer the Bloc on immigration, Nancy Boyda may NOW have a different public stand on immigration, but she campaigned just like Nancy Pelosi.

In 2006, Nancy Boyda said two very important and well-documented things about immigration. First, she said that immigration reform needed to have a "clear path to citizenship." That is a code phrase for amnesty. Second, she said that we should not build a border fence.

This is where her heart lies on immigration, regardless of what she says now. It is likely where she will return if given enough time in office!

Moreover, it proves that Nancy Boyda is not a person of principle. If she truly believed in what she campaigned on, why abandon it? If she never truly believed that in the first place, then what other bill of goods was she selling the voters in a say anything mode to get elected?

The Non-Pressworthy Release

In true "Boyda-Pelosi" form, we have this press release.

In it, Nancy tried to explain why she agreed with the Democrat majority in the House that it was a good idea to spend the day voting for a do-nothing contempt resolution rather than voting to reauthorize FISA.

Nowhere in the statement, did Nancy say specifically why she was against FISA only some mumbo jumbo about the Constitution, which last time I checked did not apply to terrorists who don't live in the United States.

As I have previously pointed out, the Democrat majority has one, and only one complaint against the Senate-passed version of FISA - liability of telecommunications companies. They have one, and only interest group demanding that telecommunications companies be held liable for helping the government wire tap terror suspects - trial lawyers.

And we know, that the "first constituent" of the Second District is Steve Boyda - trial lawyer to the core. We also know that Nancy's number one campaign benefactor is - trial lawyers.

The reason Nancy is not going on the record as being pro-trial lawyer over being pro-national security is that the people of the Second District are overwhelmingly pro-national security and anti-greedy trial lawyer.

If I were the national republicans, I'd be running radio ads during this entire recess hitting her on taking trial lawyer contributions to stop investigating terrorists. If I had the money, I'd do it myself.

Think the Trial Lawyers Don't OWN the Democrat Majority

A rival blog claimed that Nancy Boyda* was being responsible for not re-authorizing FISA. I countered that the Democrat majority was paying back the trial lawyer special interests - a special interest Nancy's husband Steve is a member of.

This article documents the money flowing into Democrat coffers from attorneys suing the telecommunications companies - $78,300 for the 2008 cycle from ONE attorney alone.

Lawyers and law firms are Nancy Boyda's TOP contributors this election cycle, $53,469, on top of $37,000 in 2006 and over $89,000 in 2004. Add it up, and you get, about $180,000 in campaign contributions from trial lawyers - far and away her top contributors (not including the nearly $300,000 of her own trial lawyer husband's money that was loaned to the 2004 campaign). When the trial lawyers say "jump," Nancy says "how high."

To paraphrase Nancy Boyda in 2006 on the campaign trail, the trial lawyer special interests don't just influence the Democrat majority, they own Nancy Boyda.

Boyda-Pelosi Honored by Liberal Farm Group

For those not familiar with national farm organizations, there is the Farm Bureau, the mainstream and largest agriculture organization. Then, there is the National Farmers Union. This is a "progressive" organization . . . that's code for Liberal.

Nancy Boyda-Pelosi was honored as a champion of the NFU's liberal policies as she worked on the Agriculture Committe on the new farm bill.

Boyda-Pelosi's biggest backers are, liberal labor union leaders, liberal trial lawyers, and liberal farm organizations. Count me among those not shocked by her true stripes coming out.

A Good Bloggin' Match

I don't usually engage in blogging back and forth, but it's Friday, and I'm just in that kind of mood.

Bloc(head) Boyda claims that Nancy Boyda-Pelosi's vote to extend FISA for 3 more weeks EQUALS not being irresponsible.

This after 6 1/2 months to evaluate and study the bill. The issues surrounding the bill have not changed for 6 1/2 months (nor for the months before they knew it would expire the last time). Oh, and after the two week extension they passed to get us past February 1st.

This week the Senate passed a long-term reauthorization of FISA, with strong bi-partisan support by a vote of 68 to 29. Yes, over 2/3rds of Senators agreed to this compromise legislation. The White House COMPROMISED on several provisions in the legislation to help move it through the Democrat-controlled Senate.

The House could have picked up the legislation, passsed it, and sent it to the President for his signature before leaving town. Instead, they held a political stunt vote of contempt on the House floor and then adjourned on Thursday, so they could start their recess early.

Why? Because the Democrats in the House owe the trial lawyers lobby BIG TIME for all the money they pumped in to their campaigns to take the majority in the House in 2006. As a payback, the House Democrats, including Boyda-Pelosi who's husband Steve is a trial lawyer, want to allow lawsuits against the telecommunications companies who cooperated with the Justice Department on FISA wiretaps.

The Justice Department had issued findings that the wiretaps were legal, and the telecom companies relied on these findings. They allowed the CIA to listen to cell phone calls from one terrorist to another that bounced off a tower in the United States.

The trial lawyers are now suing these telecom companies for following DoJ guidance and asking for big damages, and the companies are having to run up hundreds of thousands of dollars (which will run into the millions) in legal fees to fight more than 40 junk lawsuits.

If allowed to continue with the cases as Boyda-Pelosi and her husband Steve want, soon, your phone bills will go up. In the meantime, our intelligence community cannot start any new investigations. This isn't fear mongering, this is fact. And, the fault lies clearly with Nancy Pelosi and her mini-me's like your Nancy.

Boyda-Pelosi Sticks Finger in Wind - Again

Over at Boyda Bloc they are praising Nancy for voting for an earmark moratorium (oh and using, without permission, the porkbusters logo). Once again, she has changed her position at a point of convenience. Knowing this moratorium would never pass, she threw away this vote (with the permission of her mentor, Madame Speaker Pelosi whom she's told many a Kansan she "admires") after the horrible string of stories on the issue.

Let's not forget the CBS national story on the fake prison museum OR the national story about getting a quid pro quo thank you fundraiser from a lobbyist. These hurt her because she ran her campaign last year saying, "special interests don't just influence Congress, they own it." Once she got outed as being just like every other porker, she had to do something, and fast.

So, with the Republicans trying to score a PR point with a moratorium vote, she quickly reversed course (yet again) and voted against for it. "Whew, hopefully the voters won't notice all the hypocrisy in the meantime," said Boyda-Pelosi as she walked off the House floor, well, that's at least what she had to be thinking.

What's more, Bloc Boyda is running this smokescreen for her as she left town last night and let the FISA law expire. Yes, Boyda-Pelosi has decided that for at least the next 12 days, she's going to let terrorists have free and open communications about their plans to attack us and tie the hands of the intelligence committee to listen in. Good job Nancy!!

More Nancy Hypocrisy

Our first guest contibutor has submitted a post . . . for test purposes, we'll call this person "the insider."

Today's The Hill gives us a perfect example of the hypocrisy that is Boyda-Pelosi. The article outlines the blatant attempts by Pelosi and Democrat leadership to buttress their most vulnerable Democrats with lavish earmarks for their Districts.

Now, I am not going to attack the validity of the projects slated to receive funds. Many of them are very deserving. In fact, MOST projects for which Members request funding are worthy endeavors. I'm not even going to directly attack the belief that a Member of Congress should be in the business of requesting earmarks. While I personally believe that the budget/appropriations process is broken and needs to be fixed before further earmarks are granted, there is a reasonable argument to be made that Members are better suited to allocate funding than are career bureaucrats who would otherwise be making these determinations.

I will, however, draw the line when requesting these earmarks betrays a campaign promise and the confidence of the very constituents who sent that Member to Washington. Such is the case with Boyda-Pelosi. We all remember the vitriol she demonstrated when decrying the earmark process while on the campaign trail, vowing to rid Congress of their evil influence if elected. She promised that she certainly would not be a part of this shameful process. But that was just campaigning. The reality, as reported by The Hill, shows how empty that promise was:

Freshman Reps. Nick Lampson (D-Texas) and Nancy Boyda (D-Kan.), two of the
Republicans' top political targets this year, were among the biggest
beneficiaries [of earmarks]...Boyda secured for herself an astonishing $20.7
million worth of projects. She shared another $17 million worth of projects with
colleagues.

Again, I glanced at the projects...they are fine for the most part. I also happen to know of several projects on other Member's lists that didn't make the cut. They are also fine for the most part. My problem is with the lie that was told to Kansans by Boyda-Pelosi. If you are sent to Washington on a campaign promise of doing away with earmarks, by golly, don't be the poster child for pork! The Hill called Boyda-Pelosi one of the "biggest beneficiaries" of these earmarks. Sure, Pelosi and the rest of the Democrat Leadership are partly to blame, but if Boyda-Pelosi were serious about doing what she promised, the last thing she would be doing is attaching her name to tens of millions of dollars in the very earmarks she promised to eliminate.
It's shameful. It's a lie. And her constituents should call her on it.

Take With a Grain of Salt

Please do as the title suggests. From a Republican at the Manhattan Caucus location.

A survey of roughly 1/3rd of the Republicans at this location found the following results:

Ryun 53%
Jenkins 14%
Boyda 7%
Undecided 26%

Why you'd ask Republicans if they'd vote for a Democrat is beyond me, but this is a fairly valid survey size. It shouldn't be discounted, as it is representative of the group as a whole (based on the breakdown of Huckabee versus McCain and the statistical accuracy of those results found on the link).

Also, remember that many Ron Paul voters are anti-war and many McCain voters are actually more independent, so the 7% for Boyda isn't that surprising.

A Day in the Life - YAWN

According to the Leaveworth Times, Nancy Boyda-Pelosi has exactly the same type of day every other Member of Congress has or ever has had.

Fact checks:

Boyda-Pelosi said she had 22 staff members, not according to this website, which says 20.

Boyda-Pelosi said she opposed the surge originally because of readiness concerns, actually, when she walked out on the general in August, she said he was lying to Congress, that the surge was not, would not and could not work . . . let's not forget that.

Boyda-Pelosi said she didn't want her campaign to be filled with character assassination . . . umm, Steve and Nancy Boyda-Pelosi spent all fall in 2006 on the phone with reporters assassinating Jim Ryun's character, so let's dispense with the phoniness.

Not to Compare Ryun to Obama

For an example of what a wider small donor base will do to you, see exhibit A, Barack Obama, after a year of staying even with Senator Clinton, is pulling away in fundraising because of small dollar contributors.

From "The Fix" a Washington Post blog, "Both candidates raised better than $100 million in 2007, but Obama's small dollar donor base was considerably wider, allowing him to continue to raise scads of campaign cash as the race goes along."

No one knows if Jim Ryun can pull this off, but here's the theory in practice.

Inside the Spending - Ryun

Much has been made of Jim Ryun's spending this year. And, it's worth being somewhat critical because it's based on a risky strategy.

But, it's important to look inside the spending. If you look at the amount of money Ryun has raised from contributors who give less than $200 (known as unitemized contributions) it is quite substantial. This is a result of Ryun's spending on direct mail - the majority of Ryun's spending. In fact, it looks like Ryun spent as much on direct mail as he raised. This is what you have to do to build a bigger donor file.

A closer look at the numbers reveals that Ryun raised approximately $413,000 from small donors. If the average small contribution is $50, then Ryun raised this from approximately 8,000 donors.

A direct mail person will tell you that a small donor, on average will donate two more times this coming year. Ryun can probably count on 16,000 more $50 donations, with very little relative costs of fundraising. So, in theory, Jim Ryun will raise $800,000 from these donors in 2008, and it will probably cost him around $150,000 to raise it - a net of $650,000 without having one person capable of giving him more than $200.

By comparison, Nancy Boyda-Pelosi has received $73,742 from small donors, roughly 18% of Ryun's contributions. So, she would net about $117,000 from small donors in 2008, $533,000 less than Ryun, at the current pace.

Lynn Jenkins has received $38,308 from small donors, 9% of Ryun's. On this pace, she would net about $60,000 from small donors, $590,000 less than Ryun.

IF, Ryun capitalizes on this new and improved "house file" of donors without his vendor soaking him, he is well positioned to have a broad fundraising base of donors his opponents cannot compete with. He will have to rely less on big donors and PACs. This is particularly important for Ryun and may actually draw him more help from the national party and outside groups if his fundamentals are strong.

Again, this is the THEORY on which Ryun appears to be fundraising and spending. IF it works as planned in 2008, he will be well positioned to quickly and easily outraise the others in the race.

IF it does not work, he will have essentially spent a year churning mail.

As with anything in politics, it's a big IF.

Boyda-Pelosi's Benefactor

Nancy Boyda-Pelosi played off the gentleman who wrote her $4600 worth of checks at the DC fundraiser as simply a concerned native of Iola.

On her FEC report, she lists Richard Zahn with a New Jersey address, long since gone from Iola. And, do you know where Zahn got the money to give Nancy a $4600 check, prior to his recent retirement, he worked for one of the big pharmaceutical companies, Schering-Plough.

According to this website, in 2003, Zahn made $1,575,272 in total compensation for selling us prescription drugs. Boyda-Pelosi decried this type of greed in explaining why she left jobs when she worked in the pharmaceutical industry herself. She said greedy CEO's were making decisions to the detriment of the other employees.

I guess it's ok now that the greedy CEO's are writing her checks for her campaign to say thank you for official acts.

She Just Doesn't Get It

From today's Cap Journal, Nancy Boyda-Pelosi had this to say,

"This goes under the no good deed ever, ever, goes unpunished," Boyda said.

Nancy just doesn't get it. The problem is NOT the earmark she got for Iola. The problem is a lobbyist arranged a "thank you fundraiser" for it.

There was much piling on Jim Ryun because he purchased a townhouse connected to Tom DeLay. Some of the piling on was justified. Yet, not once was there any evidence produced that any official act was traded for a benefit.

Nancy Boyda-Pelosi admitted that the fundraiser was a thank you for an official act.

Hopefully, the Ethics Committee will look into this matter to see if it warrants a full investigation.

In All Seriousness - Boyda's Tarnished Ethics

I was called a "jacka_ _" for posting on Nancy Boyda's recent run-in with USA Today. So, I want to take a moment to be clear on the seriousness of the problem here.

Nancy Boyda accepted a fundraiser that was organized and paid for by a lobbyist. And, she told WIBW that it was to "thank her" (her words according to WIBW, not mine) for getting an earmark for Iola. It does not matter how worthy the earmark is. This is a serious problem and sounds like a quid pro quo. She may be investigated by the House Ethics Committee because of it.

Moreover, Nancy Boyda explicitly ran for Congress on the mantra that "Nothing Will Change Until We Change Congress." She said, "special interests just don't influence Washington, they own it." These again were her words, not mine.

When the lobbyists offered to throw her this thank you fundraiser, she could have stood by the courage of her convictions and said, "no." But, she didn't.

This is not a surprise to me. Nancy Boyda is not one to let her previous positions and principles get in her way. She has often shifted her positions, especially on two major issues of the day - Iraq (too many times to recount here) and Immigration (in 2006 she opposed a border fence and supported a pathway to citizenship for illegals).

Now, she has abandoned her call to clean up Washington, and even defended her actions as "legal" (sounds like so many other politicians that get in hot water). That very well may be true, but she'll probably have to answer to the Ethics Comittee on that question.

For us in Kansas, she needs to answer this question, what makes you think you can get away with such hypocrisy?

For those of us who voted against her, we're not surprised.

Boyda-Pelosi Fundraising/Hypocrisy

No, this isn't an analysis of Nancy Boyda-Pelosi's FEC report, though it is out, and I will comment on it.

USA today ran a front page story which singled out Nancy Boyda-Pelosi for the appearance that she traded official actions for a lobbyist-hosted fundraiser.

Just one year ago, Boyda-Pelosi said this (1/17/07), "Lobbyists didn't just influence the last Congress, they controlled it. Today, that era has come to an end. The market for political influence in Washington is closing."

To paraphrase an old saying, when one market closed, Nancy Boyda-Pelosi opened another one.

On December 19th, Boyda-Pelosi issued a news release taking credit for a $485,000 grant for a wastewater treatment project in Iola. On October 15th, the Van Scoyoc firm had registered to lobby for Iola. On November 1st, the firm hosted a fundraiser for Boyda-Pelosi at its offices. The cost for catering, beverages, room rental and incidentals: $1,203, paid for by the firm's PAC.

Yet, On the day the House of Representatives passed the lobbying law in July, Boyda-Pelosi said that the ban on gifts and meals was important to her constituents because "they want to know that I'm not sitting someplace in Washington , D.C. , with somebody that gets my attention for two solid hours." Unless, I guess, they host a nice fundraiser for you . . .

On January 18th, Boyda said, "If the good people of Kansas want to ask if this passes the smell test, I think that it does," because benefits flowed to her district.

She said towns didn't need to hire a lobbyist to get access to her and added, "This is why we need public financing. The system is a mess."

So, let me get this straight, Nancy, it's not your fault that you gave a lobbyist an earmark and they rewarded you with a fundraiser. You couldn't have just said no? This is typical spin, blame everyone else and hope no one notices what an absolute hypocrite you are.

Your entire campaign in 2006, you said, "special interests don't just influence Washington, they absolutely control it." Who knew you wanted to join the party, not change it?

What We All Knew About Kathy Already

And gosh, she was terrifically boring. Today, I went from Barack Obama to George Bush to Kathleen Sebelius, and I seemed like I was going downhill in rhetorical ability-o-meter. Wow.

Kathleen Sebelius won twice for Governor against two inferior campaigns and candidates without saying virtually any word to camera and making very few campaign stops where she gave speeches to crowds. She was built on hype and fluff, not substance or ideas - basically the result of a good PR agency. America found out what we already knew, Kathleen Sebelius is not ready for prime time.

And to think Nancy Boyda-Pelosi is several rungs down on the ladder . . .

Words Do Not Describe

I usually reserve space in this blog simply for Nancy Boyda-Pelosi. But, the head of the Democrat Party in Kansas, the Governor, is allowing her 23 year old son to run a company that sells an adult game called "Don't Drop the Soap" from the Governor's mansion. Oh, and she's proud of it.

Gov. Kathleen Sebelius' 23-year-old son John Sebelius has created an adult-themed board game, "Don't Drop the Soap," and is selling it out of the governor's mansion. The game, which has a prison theme, is being sold for $34.99, plus
packaging, shipping and handling.

"Kathleen and Gary are very proud of their son John's creativity and talent," Corcoran said. "He began this game as a class project at the Rhode Island School of Design, and he's now turned
into an entrepreneur."

governor's mansion.

The Gilius Web site describes "Don't Drop the Soap" as a game "Where no one playing enters through the front door!"

She said Kathleen and Gary Sebelius think their son's work is interesting and creative, especially the shirts he designs by hand.

Boyda-Pelosi . . . Another Hypocritical Move

Nancy went to WIBW to tout legislation she supports to eliminate the shoe tariff.

This is the same Nancy Boyda-Pelosi who rails against NAFTA and obsesses on the so-called NAFTA Super Highway. Yet, now she wants to stamp out the shoe tariff with no concessions on labor or the environment.

Also, Boyda-Pelosi's supporters in 2006 ridiculed Ryun for wrting legislation to lower tariffs on shoe imports. Anywhere from "shoe fetish" to "sending more jobs overseas." But, I don't look for consistency from her hypocritical supporters either.

I am a free trade person. I think free trade benefits everyone, except labor unions. Nancy Boyda-Pelosi says she supports "fair trade." This is code to disguise her protectionism. Yet, once again she has seen fit to dump her "principles" and shift with the winds . . . kind of like her positions on immigration and the war in Iraq.

It's tiring keeping up with the hypocrisy and flip-flopping on the issues.

When I was on my self-imposed hiatus, Steve Kraske wrote this piece with predictions about 2008 races. Among them, was that Jim Ryun would take back his seat in Congress . . .

I'm not going to comment on what that says about the Republican primary, because that's not important to me. What's important to me is what it says about Nancy Boyda-Pelosi's chances to be re-elected.

Boyda-Pelosi had $200,000 more cash on hand than Ryun. She has all the advantages of being the current office holder. She can do things like, travel to Iraq. She has the ability to send out press releases and bully reporters into writing stories about her. She has an official budget to pay for her to travel the district and politic. You'll also have to admit, Boyda-Pelosi is a hard worker, misguided as her efforts most always are.

Yet, with all that, Kraske, who most would call the number one political reporter, says Ryun will win. Along with Dennis Moore, Sam Graves and Jay Nixon.

A recent letter to the editor in the LJ World hits home on a point that I haven't talked about lately - Boyda-Pelosi's new position on immigration.

During the 2006 campaign, Nancy Boyda-Pelosi made two critical statements that everyone needs to remember. First, she said that any immigration bill needed a path to citizenship for the illegal immigrants who are already here. She reiterated it during a debate in the closing days of the campaign. The audio of Boyda-Pelosi's remarks were used in a Ryun campaign commercial. Second, Boyda-Pelosi was quoted as saying that she did not support erecting a fence on our southern border.

This is where Boyda-Pelosi's heart on this issue is. Her entire change of position is because an overwhelming majority of her district is against her clearly stated open borders beliefs.

I want to apologize to everyone for my lack of posts lately. I took a vacation for Christmas, and as Congress is still out of session, I've been out of the habit of posting. But, look for me to come back full time in 2008. It's going to be a target rich environment with all the craziness the Democrats are going to try and pull in a presidential election year.

Speaking of presidential politics, if John Edwards is wondering why he's tanking, the answer is quite simple: his message makes no sense. Essentially, Edwards talks about how hard his parents and grandparents worked to give him opportunities and to make America work - how he's grateful they provided a path for him to make millions and millions of dollars. Then, he turns around and says the government should take over our lives and then penalize those who work hard to get ahead. Not to mention, it's tough to sell "the man (Republican) is keeping us down" when you own a 20,000 square foot mansion.

It's the problem with the entire Democrat platform, it doesn't make sense to the average American when laid out in these terms. Clinton and Obama essentially believe the same thing, but they know they can't string together a majority of voters to win by saying it outright.

As for Republicans, I remain uncommitted. McCain seems to now have the inside track on the nomination and that doesn't make many Republicans out there very happy . . .

And back to Boyda-Pelosi, did she and her hubby Steve really think he would be the next Attorney General? I would hope against hope Sebelius would appoint him because he would self-destruct in that office, but Sebelius has proven too smart to make such a blund-er-er-er, well, she did recruit Paul Morrison . . . .

The Truth Before She Lied and Became the Grinch

Yesterday, Nancy Boyda-Pelosi sent out an e-mail missive in an attempt to raise money the week before Christmas. Guess she figures, people are writing out checks to charity, so why not her.

But I digress. In the e-mail she touts that she voted to give relief to 63,000 Kansans from the Alternative Minimum Tax. Good, right? I mean if that AMT fix doesn't pass before the end of the year, the refunds of those 63,000 Kansans would be delayed and they might have had to file their taxes TWICE.

Not so fast, or she pulled a fast one, or here comes the bait and switch. I received this e-mail from Nancy at 11:30am. At 3:19pm central time, Nancy voted against the AMT fix that is being sent to the President for his signature. Yes, just a few short hours after taking credit for fixing the AMT, she proves she is the Grinch who wanted to steal Christmas.

You see, Nancy Boyda-Pelosi only supported an AMT relief bill that raised taxes on other people by $53 billion.

Technical Inside the Beltway Explanation Warning: Democrats like Boyda-Pelosi say this tax relief has to be "paid for." That's cause the Democrats who wrote the budget rules said expiring tax relief (i.e. the previous AMT fix) is treated as NEW tax relief that should be paid for either by cutting spending or raising taxes. It is just blame DUMB to say preventing a tax increase is the same thing as a new tax cut, but how about cutting some of the $23 billion in earmarks to help pay for it?

Nancy Boyda-Pelosi is just like every other tax and spend liberal Democrat, the Grinches who wanted to steal your tax relief this Christmas. What's worse, she knew she was going to vote against the AMT, so she sent an e-mail out claiming credit for it before she voted against it. That's just plain dishonest.

From the "it's never going to happen" file . . .

According to this Cap Journal story, Nancy Boyda-Pelosi says we should get out of NAFTA. Never mind the studies that over and over and over again say that productivity and not trade is responsible for the decline in manufacturing jobs. Never mind the studies that say trade has a substantially bigger economic benefit than economic loss . . . let's all join Boyda-Pelosi and throw solid economic theory right out the window.

It's a populist-protectionist-union applause line, but it would be bad for our economy to get out of NAFTA - particularly an economy like Kansas that is heavy on exports.

Let's go a step further, and ask this, is there a presidential candidate with a snowball's chance of winning next November who would sign such a measure?

Here's my other question about all this, Boyda-Pelosi says NAFTA cost us jobs AND gave us immigration problems. Hmmmmmmmmm, if all of our jobs are going to say, Mexico, why would all the Mexicans come to the United States for jobs?

Nancy, please quit playing into our fears and learn economics.

My Apologies - One Term Wonder?

First, I want to offer my sincere apologies for going quiet for two weeks. A Thanksgiving vacation and computer issues left me strangely silent. Not that Nancy Boyda-Pelosi doesn't remain a target rich environment.

Boyda-Pelosi will return to Washington this week with the following to face, the surge in Iraq, which she said would never work, is in fact working . . . Rep. John Murtha, the defense hawk (and unfortunately someone who has made some rather questionable earmarks) who made it ok for moderate Dems to be pro Iraq pullout, has admitted the surge is working. The press reports and casualty reports back him up on this claim. The big question, will Boyda-Pelosi change her position yet again on Iraq?????

And, there's this - the editor of the Almanac of American Politics comments on who should be worried about being a "one term wonder." In fairness, it does say Boyda-Pelosi could benefit from a bloody Republican primary, but otherwise, it doesn't sing her praises.

RCP: Anybody who should be worried about being a one-term wonder?
CM: There are some people who probably would not have been elected in a normal election year. In a traditional election cycle, candidates like Carol Shea-Porter, and maybe Nancy Boyda and Jerry McNerney would have had difficulty winning. And so those are the members that need to be the most careful about the way they carry themselves going forward.

RCP: What are some of the races you're most looking forward to watching next year?
CM: The Boyda race is very, very interesting, for lots of reasons. The rubber matches are always a terrific race to watch. They're always bitter, there's lots of money spent, and it's always a great opportunity to see whether the so-called fluke candidates have established a set of political skills in the two years they've held office.

If you take a look at what's happened in Kansas recently, you see another example of a bloody primary that's going to end up biting them in the behind. Certainly that works in Boyda's favor. But Boyda's made some less than judicious comments that have really not played well in her district. But otherwise, most of the other freshmen I think have been very smart about crafting their message to their districts. And that includes some members that are probably, you know, their politics don't match their districts real well.

Just to be clear, from now on I will refer to "Nancy Boyda" as "Nancy Boyda-Pelosi" to remind people that our U.S. Representative sides with San Francisco values over 90% of the time AND that our Representative has agreed to accept financial support from the most liberal Speaker of all time's political network.

For example, Nancy Boyda-Pelosi voted to adjourn Congress for two weeks without providing funding for our veterans. Nancy Boyda-Pelosi campaigned on taking care of our veterans, but 49 days after the end of the 2007 fiscal year, Boyda-Pelosi has still failed to keep her promises.

Last year, now out of state liberal Josh Rosenau and many of the Democrats in Kansas, railed against Jim Ryun for introducing bills to fix tariffs on shoes. They went so far as to say Jim Ryun had a shoe fettish. Anyone who actually knows the Second District, knows it is the home to Payless Shoes. And, there have been rumors that Payless might move their headquarters. Thusly, Jim Ryun was doing his job - no credit though from the Democrats.

Nancy Boyda-Pelosi gets involved in the issue and nothing from the Democrats. Either they are now being hypocritical OR someone clued them in that this is important to keeping Payless in Kansas.

Nancy Boyda-Pelosi has the press snowed.

Boyda-Pelosi called the Parsons Sun and complained about a story the Sun ran on November 1 from Harris News Service which aired criticism of Boyda-Pelosi for taking financial assistance from Democrat leadership after saying she wouldn't. The Sun (much like the Cap Journal earlier this year on the Democrats failure to fund our military posts) ran an editorial giving Boyda a break.

The editorial says Boyda-Pelosi is right to take advantage of bringing in Pelosi to raise money. Saying she needs to compete with national money. Well, maybe Boyda-Pelosi should have thought about that before saying she wouldn't. You see, bringing in Pelosi is pretty clearly a violation of not taking help from Democrat leadership, and Boyda-Pelosi did take Frontline money, just not "officially" - getting money from leadership PACs and other common Frontline contributors.

Yes, that means this Parsons Sun editorial is the result of either lazy journalism or undue pressure from a Member of Congress. Either way, it got the story wrong.

Nancy Pelosi Flies In - More Hypocrisy

The cost to you - $300,000! That's right - with gas above three dollars in Kansas and approaching five dollars in Nancy Pelosi's neighborhood, the American taxpayer is paying for jet fuel so Nancy can raise money for her good friend, Nancy Boyda.

Hmmm, wasn't it Nancy Boyda-Pelosi who complained about the cost of the visit of VP Cheney to Kansas on behalf of Jim Ryun last year? Odd that it's OK for her to do it now . . . . not that any amount of hypocrisy stops her from doing anything . . . like using Democrat leadership to raise money for her when she said she wouldn't . . . etc, etc, etc.

Now Boyda-Pelosi Taking Credit For Other People's Work

Nancy Boyda-Pelosi makes quite a big deal about passage of a bill she says she helped write. From her website:

In 2001, Congress expanded EITC eligibility by permitting military taxpayers to elect whether or not to include combat and other special pays in their earned income. The provision, which provided critical tax relief and support to military families, is set to expire on December 31, 2007.

Boyda said, "While I don’t understand the lack of previous, permanent action, I am proud to help say ‘thank you’ to our soldiers for their immense dedication. The HEART Act finally ends the Soldier Tax. It makes expanded EITC eligibility a permanent tax relief for our troops and their families.”

In 2001 Republicans passed this tax relief that DEMOCRATS refused to allow to be permanent. That's why there was no "previous, permanent action." Either you aren't smart enough to recognize that Democrats blocked it from being permanent, OR you're conveniently leaving the blame off of who deserves it.

Boyda-Pelosi Says No to Protecting State Marriage Laws

Nancy Boyda allied herself with Democrat leaders in Washington, instead of her constituents, as she voted to kill a measure to protect state marriage laws from being changed in a courtroom by trial lawyers. The important motion Boyda voted against would have ensured that states’ laws on the definition of marriage could not be overturned, redefined or restricted (House Roll Call 1056).

Because the measure was killed by Boyda and her Democrat colleagues, the Democrats’ Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) fails to fully protect state laws from being manipulated by trial lawyers. The current ENDA laws are being misused by judges across country granting them the power to define marriage according to their own personal opinions."

The Parsons Sun last week became the first news outlet to run an article on Nancy Boyda-Pelosi's so-called "independence."

I want to focus on this:

"However, spokesman Thomas Seay said it is Boyda's performance in Congress, not who comes to her fundraisers, that really matters to voters. Although she's grateful for the support she's receiving from Pelosi and other top national Democrats, Seay said Boyda's focus remains on her district."

Umm, Thomas, Boyda-Pelosi said she didn't want Democrat Leadership help raising money. But she is and has been accepting it. That strikes of hypocrisy, and Boyda's apparently grateful for the support.

Further debunking the independent claim is this:

"Boyda votes with her party 92.1 percent of the time, according to a Washington Post online database, about the same as the average for House Democrats."

Rep. Nancy Boyda (D-Kan.) is holding a fundraiser with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi next month, despite previously rejecting financial assistance from House Democratic leadership.

Boyda’s spokeswoman told the Politico in February she was turning down the assistance because she wanted “to run an independent campaign.”

That's Nancy Pelosi, the House speaker often criticized by GOPers as the personification of elite liberalism.

Pelosi and Gov. Kathleen Sebelius will attend a Nov. 9 fundraiser for Boyda at the Shawnee home of Lyn Shaw and Dennis Langley, a former Kansas Democratic chairman."

Well, maybe the Kansas mainstream media is fooled by Boyda, but we're not. This is pure hypocrisy on Boyda's part. Or maybe Boyda thought we wouldn't notice it because it was outside the Second District.

Do Nothing Democrats

The Democrat-controlled House took their 1000th vote of the year recently, and have broken the old record for number of votes.

Don't confuse activity for results.

There have been 96 bills signed into law this year. 49 of them involved naming post offices, honoring people or giving land grants to Indian tribes. This doesn't include the multitude of bills that were technical changes or continuing funding resolutions caused by the fact NONE of the appropriatoins bills have passed the Democrat-controlled Congress.

By comparison, Republicans passed 482 bills into law in the previous two years (and yes, many were post office namings and honoring resolutions).

In fact, I'm not one to say that Republicans got it right legislatively . . . if they had, they'd still be in the majority. But, Democrats ran against Republicans saying they didn't get anything done . . . guess it's harder than it looks, huh Mr. Reid and Ms. Pelosi.

To the Dems I say this, stop playing run out the clock and hope we win the White House and start actually negotiating with President Bush on things like SCHIP. The American people want results, not excuses and political posturing.

More Evidence Boyda Was Lying When She Said She Wouldn't Accept DCCC Frontline Money

If you've seen any Hollywood movie or TV whodunit, follow the money, and you'll usually solve the mystery. MajorityAP.com did just that, and guess what they found, Nancy Boyda looks a lot like all the other Frontline Democrats.

Here are some excerpts from the story:

In NBC’s political drama “The West Wing,” fictional campaign consultant Bob Mayer once remarked, “ain’t about the ideals, it’s about the money, stupid.” Now, the show’s longtime executive producer is helping U.S. Representatives Carol Shea-Porter, D-NH, and Nancy Boyda, D-KS, put those words into action, even though neither seems to have any idea who he is.

For the third straight quarter, the two freshmen lawmakers reported receiving thousands of dollars in campaign contributions strikingly similar to those reported by House Democrats enrolled in a fundraising program sponsored by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC). Boyda and Shea-Porter publicly eschewed the committee’s fundraising help, saying it would damage their ability to remain independent from party leadership.

At the same time he donated to Shea-Porter and Boyda, Wells wrote checks to other Democrat freshmen enrolled in the DCCC’s “Frontline” program, which provides extra fundraising help to 29 Democrats expected to face fierce re-election contests. Twenty-four freshmen Democrats are included on that list.

Wells contributed $2300 to Boyda on September 29, and that same amount to Shea-Porter on September 30, the last day to receive contributions included in the Federal Elections Commission (FEC)’s quarterly report made public October 15, 2007. Wells contributed the same amount, at the same time, to U.S. Representatives Michael Arcuri, D-NY, and Zachary Space, D-OH, and half that amount, $1150, to Nick Lampson, D-TX . All are enrolled in the Frontline program.

Boyda echoed similar sentiments, with her spokeswoman telling the Politico’s Josh Kraushaar, “she ran an independent campaign in 2006, and her constituents want to see her run an independent campaign again.”

But previous research of FEC filings shows that even though both declined the fundraising help, they continue to collect the same checks written to those enrolled in the program. The trend has continued for three straight reporting cycles.

Speaking of SCHIP, did anyone else read this Journal World story on the veto override vote?

Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, who had wanted Congress to override the veto, said that after speaking last week with top health officials in the Bush administration, there seemed to be no discussion on what to do after the veto override attempt.

“We have no information from the administration on what their negotiating points are,” Sebelius said.

Last time I checked, the President was under no obligation to negotiate with the Governor of Kansas on SCHIP.

Why is Sebelius interjecting herself? Is this a signal she is contemplating running against Pat Roberts for the Senate? If so, I'll say this, Pat would put up quite a bit more of a fight than Tim or the good doctor did. In fact, Kathleen hasn't had a tough race since her first run for Insurance Commissioner.

Sorry to divert attention from the Second District.

After the President's veto was sustainec, Kansas Democratic Rep. Nancy Boyda called it a “morally bankrupt vote.”

“To my mind, every vote in Congress makes a moral statement. … It told working families that a radical minority would rather score political points than take care of children’s health,” Boyda said. Boyda said Congress needs “to get past the partisan shouting match that doomed” the vote. “Nobody in Kansas really cares whether Republicans or Democrats score more political points,” she said. “They just care whether their kids can see a doctor."

Fact 1 - SCHIP is still ongoing. No children are currently being denied health care.

Fact 2 - Democrats have REFUSED to negotiate with Republicans on the program.

Boyda is simply falling in line with her liberal friends in Congress . . . if you haven't seen Rep. Pete Starks' comments saying President Bush is amused by our soldier's dying in Iraq and that he'd rather see that than fund SCHIP:

"You don't have money to fund the war or children. But you're going to spend it to blow up innocent people if we can get enough kids to grow old enough for you to send to Iraq to get their heads blown off for the President's amusement. This bill would provide healthcare for 10 million children and unlike the President's own kids, these children can't see a doctor or receive necessary care. [...]"

And Boyda's reward, Nancy Pelosi is coming to do a fundraiser for her . . . after giving her $10,000 last month and getting Murtha to give her $5,000. Given Pelosi's Congress having about a 17% approval rating, I wouldn't think this is the smartest choice . . . but I've never accused Boyda of being smart.

Nancy Boyda ran on "cleaning up" the ethics of Congress. Turns out its all talk.

Earlier this year, Rep. John Murtha was caught red-handed using strong arm tactics. As Republicans questioned his earmarking of money, he threatened to strip earmarks from anyone who spoke out against him, including Rep. Todd Tiahrt.

Nancy Boyda voted to kill the resolution that would have reprimanded Murtha for the tactics that were in violation of the spirit if not the letter of the House rules.

Boyda was rewarded handsomely with a $5000 PAC contribution from Murtha AND $10,000 from the PAC of Murtha's "Protector-in-Chief" Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Yes, nearly 10% of Boyda' s haul for party loyalty in the face of better ethics.

Jim Ryun continues his strategy of broadening his fundraising base. Makes sense to do it nationally as he still has a national name from his Olympic days. While some have criticized his debt (cut roughly in half from the last report) and spending, it comes with the territory when broadening a base like this. The theory is that once you've created a big enough "house file" of donors who are regular givers to your campaign, that you can draw solely on them and raise a lot of money without spending much to do so. It's a somewhat risky strategy, particularly as some direct mail consultants are known for turning a lot of mail but not turning a campaign much profit (Ryun would be wise to cut the consultants out of the prospecting game soon and start growing his war chest) . . . Anyway, Ryun's net Cash on Hand (taking his debt into consideration) grew by $74,000 and he did raise 87% of his money from individuals.

This stands in stark contrast to Nancy Boyda who took in 47% of her campaign contributions from special interest PACs. The same PACs she criticized Jim Ryun for taking money from last year. The PACs she said she didn't need help from because she was going to run the same Kansas based grassroots campaign she did last year. Nancy Boyda is simply proving to be the fraud I knew she would be.

Lynn Jenkins continues to raise and bank money, most of it from Kansas. On the downside, her take this quarter was off by 65% over her first quarter in the race if you include her own money and off by over 40% if you don't. I know I've been wrongly accused of being anti-Jenkins, but by any objective measure this is something she should be somewhat concerned about (Ryun's take was down 27% over the tougher summer months fundraising quarter). Jenkins also continues to receive help from WISH LIST PAC, a pro-choice special interest group.

Finally, just a couple notes about the big picture.

Nancy Boyda has raised $555,000 for her re-election. People have given nearly $1.2 million against her re-election. Yes, it's more than a 2 to 1 ratio against her coming back for a second term.

Ryun's camp took it's first official swing at Jenkins in their press statement . . . as I took Jenkins to task, I'd say to Ryun, please don't do this. The sooner this primary gets uglier, the longer it will be ugly and the less chance the Republican nominee has of winning next November. Nancy Boyda has made herself one of the three most vulnerable Democrats in Congress, let's not snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Nancy Boyda is so upset about this little blog that she's had one of her supporters start a response blog - Boyda Bloc which is dedicated to coming to her defense. They started off defending Boyda taking nearly half of her money from PACs in the 3rd Quarter.

Does anyone other than me remember Boyda saying she didn't want Washington help?

Some of her PAC contributors, John Murtha and Nancy Pelosi. Oh, and she also was the beneficiary of contributions sent to her using the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee as a "conduit."

Hmmmm, looks an awful lot like she's agreed to become and unofficial recipient of the Democrats' Frontline program to me.

Boyda's Loss - Inevitable?

Real Clear Politics ran this article today, calling Boyda one of the three Members of Congress least deserving of their election in the 2006 Democratic wave.

The astute writer picked up on the fact that Boyda didn't write the pension bill, but that the Democrat leaders gave it to her to introduce:

"The party has tried to help her build legislative accomplishments - she introduced the bill to ban pensions to members of Congress convicted of certain crimes"

And, the only hope Boyda has is an ugly Republican primary:

The Republican primary will produce a nominee in strong position to take on the freshman Democrat. Ryun is running again, as is State Treasurer Lynn Jenkins. Jenkins has already hinted that the primary may be an ugly affair. In a meeting of district Republican leaders in August, she criticized Congressional GOP leadership, though without mentioning Ryun by name."

Let's hope Jenkins and Ryun will not make it ugly . . .

“60 Plus decided to present a Benjamin Franklin award to those who support repeal of this anti-farmer, anti-senior tax,” said 60 Plus Association President Jim Martin. “And former Congressman Jim Ryun has pledged to vote for death tax repeal if he’s re-elected U.S. Representative from Kansas.”

The 60 Plus Association is a non-partisan seniors advocacy group with a free enterprise, less government, less taxes approach to seniors issues. 60 Plus has made ending the death tax as one of its top priorities. Ryun voted for a repeal of the tax in 2005 and remains dedicated to pushing for a permanent repeal.

“I am honored and humbled to receive an award from such a distinguished group. We share the same principles of lowering taxes and reducing wasteful spending. I look forward to continue working for Kansas seniors in Congress,” stated Jim Ryun.

Nancy Boyda must have known the prison story was going to look bad, because the same day it came out, she wrote a column for her website explaining her support for more money for real prisons. The column was clearly a "rush job" with at least two errors that would have been found by someone spending any time editing it (I have a screen shot of it in case she goes back in to fix it now). It was also not timely. She simply was using it to try and give herself political cover as the letter had been sent by Boyda on June 11, 2007 - three and 1/2 months earlier.

It also begs the question, why use your political capital to get an earmark for a prison museum when you should have been using it to fix what you say is broken in federal prisons? A question Nancy never answered when asked on WIBW.

Yesterday Nancy Boyda sent out another campaign e-mail.

This one thanked her supporters for helping with fundraising . . . then invited them to come hear her speak at her church.

First observation, if Jim Ryun would have sent this out, he would have been ridiculed as a right wing religious fanatic.

Second observation, Nancy Boyda had campaign meet and greets at churches last year, but no one said anything about it. Yet, Phill Kline spoke at churches for political purposes and was derided by the Democrats. Before you say Nancy's different, people have told me Nancy asked them for campaign contributions at church.

There might not be a memo like Kline had, but this appears to be a campaign strategy.

So, the question for discussion is, should Nancy Boyda be making political appearances at churches under the auspices of faith any more than Phill Kline?

Nancy Boyda is a "justifier." She feels like she needs to justify her existence, and when she screws up, she feels like she needs to justify her mistake.

When you're in the public eye and your words are on the record, sometimes being a justifier, gets you in trouble because you start making stuff up on the spot.

For instance, Nancy Boyda told a CBS Evening News correspondent that the Lansing prison museum was a memorial for fallen prison guards - seven in Leavenworth County according to her interview with WIBW.

Problem - the Mayor of Lansing didn't say anything about the museum being a memorial (and this guy loves to talk about this museum, so it's not like he wouldn't have mentioned it).

Next, Boyda goes to some lengths to say it's ok for the federal government to invest $100,000 when private funds are going to raise $3 million - roughly 3% of the total cost. OK, maybe we could accept that. Except, Boyda asked for nearly $1.2 million - roughly 40% of the total cost.

Then, let's talk about earmarks in general. Nancy Boyda campaigned against wasteful earmarking in Washington, DC. She then told CBS news that she pretty much just made every request that came into her office. Um, no review to eliminate projects or no prioritizing of projects that would do the most public good - just ask for all of them? News flash, that's not eliminating waste, that's adding to it.

And, then there was "the other people are doing it" justification. In essence, Boyda said, if President Bush can spend money on the war without being questioned, then I can spend money on a prison museum. Nancy, I'd say the President has been questioned extensively about his spending on the war, by Congress, in the media, in the blogosphere, etc, etc, etc . . . so let's stay focused on what you're doing.

And in the written piece called "Your Tax Dollars Held Captive", Boyda looks well, not that bright . . .

Here's one of the strange things about the $100,000 Congressional earmark for a Prison Museum in Kansas, the subject of my report tonight on the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric: the money is for the interior of the museum, presumably for things like display cases. But the museum planning isn't even far enough along for anyone to know how much is needed for the interior. In fact, before anyone can really think about the interior, the town of Lansing, Kansas has to raise about $3 million to build the outside of the museum, and the hard core fundraising hasn't even started.

Some would say giving $100,000 commitment of federal tax dollars to a local museum that may never be more than the current 3-D model...is putting the cart before the horse. What if I told you that the Kansas member of Congress who got the earmark, Nancy Boyda, actually asked for more than ten times that amount for the Prison Museum in her home state? It's true. She put in for $1.18 million tax dollars for the museum. That amount was apparently whittled down by her fellow Democrats.

When I asked Rep. Boyda why she wanted so much money for the Museum, she said it's simply because the Lansing, Kansas Mayor asked. "We get all kinds of requests (for earmarks) and, for the most part, we made the request that we were asked," Boyda told me. It sure makes her sound generous with our tax dollars...as though all one needs to do is get Nancy Boyda's ear, ask for federal money for a project, and she'll comply. When I asked Rep. Boyda why federal tax money should pay for a local project that is apparently designed to help the local economy, Boyda gave a big picture answer. She said the Prison Museum would in effect be a sort of memorial to fallen prison guards who do some of the most dangerous work in the nation.

When I interviewed the Mayor of Lansing who's in charge of the project, he never once mentioned the Museum as a memorial. Besides, there already is a national memorial for fallen law enforcement officers in Washington D.C...built, by the way, entirely with private funds. There are other issues with this earmark.

When I interviewed Rep. Boyda she wasn't really sure how the money would be spent. In fact, no detailed budget had been presented justifying the specific need for the money, or committing to specific details of how the money would be spent.

Boyda Can't Help It

Today, Nancy Boyda sent out another campaign e-mail . . . this time it's primary focus was fundraising. She's promoting her newspaper inserts again . . . saying she will have more in depth discussions on issues. Um, Nancy, your newspaper inserts last year were primarily hit pieces on Jim Ryun, so this would actually be the first in depth discussions on issues (if you call the phantom superhighway an issue).

Then Nancy threw in a promo for Demofest . . .

And just when I thought maybe Nancy had learned her lesson, I got to the last paragraph . . .

"I wrote to you last week about my recent mission trip to Parsons, where I stayed at a local church while helping repair flood damage in Freedonia. As you may know, much of Kansas has suffered from severe weather this year. Twelve Second District counties were declared federal disaster areas after the June floods, and other regions have endured heavy rains, tornadoes, and late freezes. I ask you to join me in keeping all Kansas victims of natural disaster in your thoughts and prayers."

First, Nancy is now promoting this thing as a "mission trip." I guess she's doing that because she thinks it sounds better. She did not mention that it was a "mission trip" in her first e-mail . . .

Second, some commenters suggested Boyda wasn't calling on people to click on her fundraising link in the first e-mail . . . well, she actually did by calling their attention to visit the "links of interest" section where she had put one in on the flood relief, followed by her campaign link and CONTRIBUTION link. She could have put the flood relief link in the body of the e-mail and just left the campaigning and contributing off. But she didn't. She CHOSE to raise money from the story of these victims.

Again, I have no problem with Nancy sending out an e-mail talking about her work with flood relief, just please don't try to raise campaign money from this tragedy (twice).

No Surprises Here

It's no wonder the Majority Leader came to Kansas for her, Steny Hoyer has Nancy Boyda in his hip pocket.

Dear Nancy and the Do-Nothing Democrats, How's the Budget Coming Along?

Democrats control both houses of Congress. Yet, they have not been able to send ONE appropriation bill to the President. Not one piece of the budget has made it to his desk. Oh, and the deadline is this coming Sunday.

The first important fact to note here is that the Democrats haven't managed to build a consensus on even ONE bill to send to the President. And, moderate Republicans have proven to be very willing to work with Dems, particularly when it comes to spending, so this means the stuff they want to pass must be really bad.

Point two: Cycle back to January when Nancy Boyda tried to blame Republicans as the reason Kansas military bases took cuts in their projects. Republicans "failed to pass a budget last year" she said.

This is nothing but spin and should be discounted as such, because Democrats in the Senate blocked Republicans from getting the 60 votes needed to pass those bills. A tactic Republicans are no doubt employing now. But, Nancy has establised the precedent that the party in the majority is to blame. Either she wasn't informed enough at the time to understand the tactics, or she was lying to cover her backside, but according to her the Democrats are responsible for the budget getting passed this year.

So, who is Nancy going to be blaming next Monday? My guess is, not herself or her party.

Back to what is likely to happen . . .

Democrats want to drive through spending increases in their pet programs. The way to do that is to get closer to Christmas with no budget, then package their spending increases with "must pass" legislation, like funding for our troops, threaten their Republican colleagues that they will work right through Christmas Day to get enough votes to pass it, AND then dare the President to veto it. Based on the fact President Bush has hardly vetoed anything, they're betting he won't draw a line in the sand on troop funding.

What Will Nancy Do?

The NRCC sent out the following press release . . .

Washington- Nancy Boyda (KS-02) and the Democrats rode into Washington on a high horse. So far nothing has changed. Now, Boyda has the golden opportunity to make good on her campaign promises to support comprehensive earmark reform.

Today, House Republican leaders introduced a discharge petition in order to bring real, comprehensive earmark reform legislation to the floor. A majority of the U.S. House of Representatives' current total membership – 217 Members – must sign the petition in order to stop pork-barrel projects from being slipped into legislation in the dead of night.

Nancy Boyda promised to support openness and transparency:
“Congress must never waste a single taxpayer dime on needless spending… I'll support legislative rules changes to ensure that proposed federal spending is subjected to a competitive awards process that values national necessity over political gain.” (www.nancyforcongress.com)

“On the campaign trail, Nancy Boyda promised voters that she would work hard for transparency and reform,” said NRCC Communications Director Jessica Boulanger . “Will Boyda have the courage to do the right thing and sign this petition to put a stop to secret earmarks, or will she once again cave to the partisan pressures of Washington ?”

Track the signatures on the discharge petition and see if Nancy Boyda stands for real earmark reform.

Ryun Fundraising

From The Hill Newspaper, Jim Ryun is already off to a bang for his 4th Quarter fundraising efforts, and those efforts don't officially begin for 11 days.

"Former Reps. Jeb Bradley (N.H.), Melissa Hart (Pa.) and Jim Ryun (Kan.) join three challengers to perennial GOP targets and three challengers taking on freshman Democrats in the first batch of top-tier candidates to get fundraising help from the Republican Conference."

"The event, which is set for Oct. 24 at the Capitol Hill Club, has raised between $75,000 and $100,000 per candidate in the past and is expected to raise a similar amount this time."

As we've said before, this is a mixed bag for Ryun as he will be accused by the Jenkins and Boyda camp of being too cozy with DC. But, Ryun will walk away with 75,000 to 100,000 reasons not to care about those accusations.

Ryun is also referred to as a "top tier" candidate in the article, which will likely make the Jenkins camp upset as well. While the flyer for the event did carry a disclaimer that the NRCC was taking no position in the primary, it seems as though Ryun's former colleagues think highly enough of him to want him back.

Also of note, Nick Jordan will be a beneficiary of this fundraising effort. A clear sign the Republicans believe he represents our best shot at picking off do-nothing Dennis in the 3rd CD. I think it's outstanding that Moore has joined Boyda as a Top 10 target.

Nancy Boyda sent out an interesting campaign missive today. It highlighted her work in Parsons flood relief. To that end, we say, good for Nancy.

While I was feeling somewhat good about Nancy, I looked at the right of the page for the links she had in her e-mail. First, was a link to Labette County Flood Relief. Good. Then was a link to her campaign website - completely fair. The third link was "Contribute to Campaign." For me, that went too far. I know it wasn't in the body of the e-mail, but it still says, "Hey, look at me, I'm helping with flood relief, contribute to my campaign." That's taking advantage of people's pain and suffering for fundraising purposes. Bad form Nancy.

Boyda Gets Dem Leadership Backing

U.S. House Democrat Majority Leader was in Kansas trying to prop up Nancy Boyda. Boyda, who once claimed "independence" from the Democrat leadership must feel she's in enough election trouble 14 months out to call in the majority leader.

It's a risky strategy. First, she's going back on her word not to accept help from national Democrat leaders. Next, the Democrat Congressional majority has about a 20% approval rating. Not only are the flip-flopping and bad ratings a problem, but Hoyer has an ethics problem. Hoyer's new Chief of Staff is a former lobbyist who once gave a below market loan to a Democrat Congressman, allegedly in exchange for support of a piece of legislation.

The Kansas press continues to give her a pass on her regular inconsistencies . . . Boyda has raised thousands of PAC dollars from Democrat leadership PACs as well as thousands in contributions from DC lobbyists, yet she's been allowed to claim "independence" from DC without public challenge from the lemmings in the Kansas media. Hoyer comes to town for her and apparently not one reporter raised a question about why she would bring him to Kansas if she was so "independent."

Let's face it, Boyda looks to get a free pass from the media . . . much like "do-nothing Dennis" in the 3rd CD.

Boyda on Petraeus

Nancy Boyda released a statement about General Petraeus testimony yesterday. The header says she released it after his testimony, but the generality of the statement and the fact she stuck to the same lines she was giving everyone this summer indicates it was written before the testimony.

In an attempt to play to the middle of the second district, Boyda has changed her tune in recent months, saying we need to get out of Iraq to prepare for future terrorist attacks. It's her mushy stance she hopes will keep the liberals from abandoning her while appealing to "pro-defense" Independents (I have documented on this blog the many times Boyda has changed her stance on Iraq, so it's no surprise she's moving on the issue again).

In hindsight, I tend to agree that going into Iraq, we didn't have the right plan to win the peace. However, hindsight is ALWAYS 20/20. And, I don't think there's any question that if we pull our troops out of Iraq now, we better prepare for future terrorist attacks here at home because the terrorists won't be fighting us there and can deploy over here.

The statement goes on to indicate that terrorists are very strong in Iran, Syria and North Korea and are growing stronger in 60 countries. So, is Nancy saying that if terrorists attack us from one of these other 60 countries that she is OK with sending our troops over to attack that country . . . if so, she can forget about appeasing the liberals . . .

Petraeus to Report

General Petraeus is reporting to Congress today.

I don't know what he's going to say, but I know how people will react.

Boyda and her liberal Democrat friends (the "we've already lost, it's too late, don't bother me with the facts," gang) will have a two track approach. Anything good Petraeus says about Iraq will be tied to President Bush and said to have been looked at through "rose colored glasses." Anything bad Petraeus says about Iraq will be seized upon as the reason(s) to fully "re-deploy" (i.e. withdraw) our troops within six months to a year.

I'm betting even Boyda isn't going to be dumb enough to make another outburst like she did with General Keane.

What should we be looking for? Progress. Is the current strategy making progress? Does it give us a chance to complete our goal of turning Iraq over to Iraqis without leaving it in complete chaos?

Apparently General Keane was back before the House Armed Services Committee yesterday. Word on the street is the General is none to happy with Nancy. I'm still checking with sources to get a first-hand report of what happened.

Nancy Boyda was at Labor Day festivities in Topeka yesterday. She said the American dream was under attack. The culprit - apparently those big bad multi-national corporations.

This is typical left-wing Democrat rhetoric, and it's the type of fear mongering Boyda is known for. Remember the supposed super highway she talked about that was going to wipe out thousands of acres of Kansas farmland . . .

And what about the healthcare crisis that she said needed to be solved in the next 18-24 months or else we were doomed . . . haven't seen the self-proclaimed "health care expert" Boyda solving that one.

If you think it's bad now, wait till this time next year when she's fearing for her political life. Better break out the old disaster drills because Nancy will say the sky will come crashing down if Ryun or Jenkins is elected.
