According to today's roll call, Republicans are pushing a motion to enforce a House rule the Democrats inserted as part of their "ethics reform package." The rule says how a member of Congress does or does not vote on a bill cannot be used as a condition for getting or not getting earmarks. Basically, this rule is so House leadership cannot use an earmark for a project in a Congressman's district as leverage to require them to vote one way or another.
Rep. John Murtha shouted down Congressman Rogers of Michigan on the House floor after Rogers attempted to strip a Murtha earmark from a bill. Murtha told Rogers that he would not get an earmark "now or forever." This shouting match follows a similar outburst Murtha directed at Rep. Todd Tiahrt last week (according to the Politico).
Now Rep. Rogers is offering the motion to enforce the House rule. Democrats, according to the Roll Call story, will likely vote this motion down with a procedural move.
So much for running the most ethical Congress in history as the Democrats promised.
Dedicated to the proposition that Nancy Boyda is a one termer.

I don't doubt that the Democrat Congress is corrupt, but having Republicans make the claim is like the pot calling the kettle black. The GOP has zero credibility on ethics. Instead of taking shots at Democrats, it would be more productive if Republicans would just police themselves. So long as the likes of Karl Rove, AG Gonzalez, Don Wolfowitz are around, the Republican Party has no right to criticize Democrat ethics.
Congressman Murtha told Congressman Rogers that he wouldn't get any earmarks until somebody gave him a townhouse.
I'd vote for whatever earmark Jack Abramoff wants if you give me a townhouse.
"So much for running the most ethical Congress in history as the Democrats promised."
You're missing the point. The last Congress (the DeLay-Ryun Congress) was the most CORRUPT Congress in history. The Democrats might not be the most ethical, but they're a great deal better than what he had last year.
Listen to what you said, "Yes, I know we're bad, but we're not as bad as the last guys."
Great case you're making for why it's ok for the Democrats to break their promises.
I'm not saying that it's okay from Democrats to break promises. I'm just saying that Republicans have no right to criticize.
I think a new face like Lynn Jenkins might be what the Dr. ordered.
Republicans who DIDN'T have ethics problems have every right to criticize.
The problem with the GOP stemed from Bush and DeLay. Republicans who didn't support Bush or DeLay have every right to criticize.
You mean the same "new face" Lynn Jenkins that hiked taxes on Kansans because David Kerr told her to? Yeah, sounds like a winner.
I am a Ryun supporter but don't like that Jenkins is being portrayed as a Democratic "tax and spender". The facts don't bear that out.
